What I liked about the book:
This picture book is a wonderful read about emotions, mental health and resilience. It gently introduces having big feelings and support through self-acceptance and the help of others. It helps picture book readers understand anyone can have a "cloud hanging over them" and sometimes you just have to ride out the stormy weather. But it's hopeful in that the child character has hope and friendship throughout the storm.
How I discovered this book:
I went to the author's book launch at a local indie bookstore. The read-aloud drew me into the story and illustrations. And it was such a universal theme that everyone in the audience applauded.
I also like to find books through Canadian kidlit reading programs like: , , @kidsbookcentre.bsky.social, @scbwi.bsky.social Crystal Kite awards - Canada division. As well as the Governor General's literary awards - text for children.
Word-of-mouth recommendations are always good too (I keep a written list) and I discover books this way via friends and Instagram. I'll note an interesting book and then place a hold on it via my local library (I am a Libby fan to borrow ebook versions so I don't have to go back and forth to the physical library).
I also created (in Canva) a graphic bookshelf of all the books I read in a year - by month - with the book covers. It's handy to remember author names and book series' I've liked - so I can discover other their other books in future.
